Not black history, American history.
Yes I am black. Yes, I (unfortunatly) still think it is neccessary to have black history month but I hate it.
I would love for us to think about it as American history. Then we could incorporate famous figures and events in there appropriate points on the historical timeline and learn about them when we are studying that time period. While we are at it we could insert the much overlooked and ignored women and other people of color who have been a part of shaping American history but are missing or breezed over in our history books. I really don't think this is asking too much and without this we are being deprived of the true story.

Lovely reads
If you want a little more valentines love in your life try these literary choices:
My Heart Is Like A Zoo by Michael Hall
A great childrens book about the powers of the heart. I love the illustrations in this book because all of the animals are made out of heart shapes.
Sweetheart by Sara Zarr
I loved this book! It sort of became my valentine. It is about the strength of love beyond romantic love.
100 Love Sonnets by Pablo Neruda
These might be the most passionately beautiful poems I have ever read. They have been translated from Spanish. I can only imagine what is lost in translation.

February
It's February and I just have one question. Why to we have to stuff so much stuff in this cold short month. It's making my head hurt. First there was Groundhog day. (if I have a say that thing may not live to see spring.)
Then we have Saint Valentines Day. Do you have any idea how hard it is to think up valentines projects for four and five year old boys.
Then there is Chinese New Year. (I think this is the year of the tiger) which is not so bad because you can restart on those resolutions that you already failed. Plus there are fireworks and dragons.
Then you have Presidents Day. Which is nice because you get a day off. Except I don't get the day of and boy do I need a vacation.
One last thing don't forget that the whole entire month is Black History month. (more on this in another post)
So now that I have vented my frustrations with February I will note that it could be worst. It could be a month of nothing but cold. So happy celebrating whatever you are celebrating today!

Let It Snow. I guess.
Tomorrow there is supposed to be a fair amount of snow in this area. So if you cant beat them join them. (I hope next weekend is unseasonably warm.)
